Jeniferever - Choose A Bright Morning
Hailing from the Swedish city of Uppsala, famous previously only for its historic university, Jeniferever are the product of their geographical environment. Think big, windswept landscapes, covered frequently in snow and ice which thaws to leave a crystal clear, sparkling flow. And that’s just the sleeve art.
If you imagine what that would sound like as well, then you won’t be far off. The opening and closing tracks, From Across The Sea and Opposites Attract, integrate little touches of ‘Disintegration’-era Cure, but overall the Jeniferever sound is of Death Cab For Cutie playing atmospheric post-rock. The strung-out leisurely guitars and Ben Gibbard-esque gentle vocals form a pleasant template for the songs here, but it’s the individual finishing touches that are dotted throughout that make ‘Choose A Bright Morning’ such a rewarding listen.
These little things make such a big difference; the subtle strings that creep through A Ghost In The Corner Of Your Eye, the way that the epic Winter Nights already bears quite a resemblance to Mogwai long before the mournful brass turns it into their very own Burn Girl Prom Queen, and the lovely banjo that plucks the dying breaths from Marks. Any initial doubts that nine songs over 60 minutes might mean self-indulgent toss soon melt away like a glacier under a hole in the ozone layer. Swede dreams are made of this.
